Overview
Your one-rep max, or 1RM, is the estimated maximum load you can lift for one repetition of a specific exercise. Because a true maximum attempt is demanding and technique can break down under heavy loads, many lifters use an estimated 1RM based on a weight they can lift for several repetitions.
A 1RM calculator is most useful as a planning tool rather than a definitive measure of strength. It can help you:

How to estimate your 1RM

For example, if you lift 80 kilograms for 5 repetitions:
80 × (1 + 5 ÷ 30) = 93.3 kilograms
Rounded to a practical increment, the estimated 1RM is about 92.5 or 95 kilograms, depending on the plates available and your gym's loading options.
Another commonly used approach is the Brzycki equation:
Estimated 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − repetitions)
Using the same 80-kilogram set for 5 repetitions:
80 × 36 ÷ (37 − 5) = 90 kilograms
These formulas can produce different results because they make different assumptions about the relationship between repetitions and maximal strength. A calculator may show one estimate, an average of several formulas, or a range. Treat that output as a useful starting point, not a laboratory measurement.
Convert your estimate into a training load
Once you have an estimated 1RM, multiply it by the percentage you want to use:
Training load = estimated 1RM × percentage
If your estimated 1RM is 90 kilograms, 75% is:
90 × 0.75 = 67.5 kilograms
Round the result to the nearest load you can safely and consistently use. If the available weight is 67.5 kilograms, use it. If your equipment only allows 65 or 70 kilograms, select the option that preserves good form and the intended effort.
Inputs and assumptions
A reliable one rep max calculator depends on accurate inputs. Enter the actual load used, not the weight you intended to use. For a barbell movement, decide whether the input includes the bar and any attachments. For dumbbells, record whether the calculator expects the weight of one dumbbell or the combined weight of both. When using a machine or a Total Gym, record the setting and resistance method because the number may not be directly comparable with free-weight loads.
Also record the following details:
- Exercise: Use the same movement each time you compare estimates.
- Repetitions: Count only complete, technically acceptable repetitions.

Do not treat a calculated 1RM as permission to attempt a maximal lift. Training percentages are guidelines
Percentage charts are useful for organizing a plan, but they are not universal prescriptions. A load that feels moderate on one day may feel heavy after poor sleep, high stress, unusual soreness, or a demanding sports session. Many lifters also use a training max instead of their estimated 1RM. A training max is a deliberately conservative value, such as a percentage below the estimate, used to calculate working sets. This creates room for normal daily variation and can make progressive overload easier to manage.
Worked examples
Example 1: estimating from a moderate set
You complete 8 repetitions with 60 pounds on a dumbbell or barbell exercise. Using the Epley equation:
60 × (1 + 8 ÷ 30) = 76 pounds
Your estimated 1RM is approximately 76 pounds. A 70% planning load would be about 53 pounds, which you could round to the nearest practical increment. Because an eight-repetition set is affected by muscular endurance and pacing, use the estimate to guide your next session rather than treating it as an exact maximum.
Example 2: planning a strength-focused session
Your recent set of 3 repetitions at 100 kilograms produces an estimated 1RM of approximately 110 kilograms using the Epley formula:
100 × (1 + 3 ÷ 30) = 110 kilograms
A planned set at 80% would be:
110 × 0.80 = 88 kilograms
You might round to 87.5 or 90 kilograms, then complete the prescribed repetitions while keeping technique consistent. If the first set is unexpectedly difficult, reduce the load rather than forcing the calculated number.
Example 3: tracking progress
Suppose you previously lifted 70 kilograms for 5 repetitions and later lift 75 kilograms for the same number of repetitions. The estimated 1RM rises from about 82 kilograms to about 87.5 kilograms using the Epley equation. That change suggests improved performance under comparable conditions. Record the date, exercise, load, repetitions, equipment, and notes about effort so you can judge whether the comparison is fair.
When to recalculate
Recalculate your estimated 1RM when you have a meaningful new performance to record, such as completing more repetitions with the same load or lifting more weight for the same repetitions. For most training plans, checking after a training block is more useful than recalculating after every workout. Frequent changes can make your targets move more than your actual performance warrants.
Update the estimate when the exercise setup changes substantially. A different bar, machine, range of motion, grip, incline, resistance setting, or repetition tempo may create a new performance baseline. Keep separate records rather than combining unlike movements.
Before each session, use the estimate as a reference and then apply a readiness check. If your warm-up feels unusually heavy, reduce the planned load or repetitions.
